Close As Pages In A Book: Barbara Cook

An essential recording. Barbara Cook used Make The Man Love Me as an audition number during her early Broadway career, and she brings to it a riveting feeling of quiet, desperate urgency. The bewitching verse to On The Sunny Side Of The Street gets a rare outing in this recording. The songs in this collection formed the basis for a Cook cabaret act in the early 90s and cover the entire timespan of Fields' work. Tasteful arrangements from Peter Matz, Michael Gibson and Wally Harper put the glorious Cook voice and Fields lyrics in the foreground where they belong. My only criticism is DRG's parsimony in wasting no money on liner notes.

Fields tracks: It's Not Where You Start, Close As Pages In A Book, I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Make The Man Love Me, Exactly Like You, April Snow, Don't Blame Me, I'm In The Mood For Love, On The Sunny Side Of The Street, The Way You Look Tonight, Bojangles Of Harlem, I Must Have That Man, I'm Way Ahead, April Fooled Me
