A major disappointment from this performer, who showed her talent in Maltby and Shire's Closer Than Ever. Irritating swinging and jazzy arrangements destroy any chance of Mayes delivering an interpretation worthy of Fields' lyrics in such numbers as Alone Too Long (which comes complete with finger-snapping, ooh-ooh-oohs, dooh-dabby-doohs, and lyric interpolations). Plus-points are an extra verse for I Can't Give You Anything But Love , the rarely sung middle section to Pick Yourself Up , and the introductory verse to Don't Blame Me . Mayes' treatment of I Dream Too Much does work well, eschewing the trills. Jazz arrangements often betray lyricists, although the Sara Zahn tribute to Carolyn Leigh shows that it can be done.
