The Dorothy Fields Songbook: Sally Mayes

A major disappointment from this performer, who showed her talent in Maltby and Shire's “Closer Than Ever”. Irritating swinging and jazzy arrangements destroy any chance of Mayes delivering an interpretation worthy of Fields' lyrics in such numbers as Alone Too Long (which comes complete with finger-snapping, ooh-ooh-oohs, dooh-dabby-doohs, and lyric interpolations). Plus-points are an extra verse for I Can't Give You Anything But Love , the rarely sung middle section to Pick Yourself Up , and the introductory verse to Don't Blame Me . Mayes' treatment of I Dream Too Much does work well, eschewing the trills. Jazz arrangements often betray lyricists, although the Sara Zahn tribute to Carolyn Leigh shows that it can be done.

Fields tracks: Diga Diga Doo, Doin' The New Low-Down, I Can't Give You Anything But Love, The Way You Look Tonight, Alone Too Long, He's Good For Me, Pick Yourself Up, April Fooled Me, April Snow, There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This, Where Am I Going?, Don't Blame Me, I Won't Dance, Never Gonna Dance, Pink Taffeta Sample Size 10, I Dream Too Much, Make The Man Love Me, Close As Pages In A Book
